Christmas is a time for family!

We had a great time this Christmas spending time with our families! Here are a few photos showing just how large our families have become! We spent Chrismas eve with Grandma & Grandpa D & family. Everyone was in for the weekend.

We went to Grandma & Grandpa L's for Chrismtas day. The family is growing with 2 new additions this year.

Here's one of just our family - mommy, daddy, and Noah. We have so much to be thankful for, with the birth of our Lord and Savior being the first. For us - mommy & daddy - little Noah has been such a blessing as well. It is hard to believe he is just a few weeks away from his one year birthday.

Noah sure enjoyed Christmas and all the time with family. He also received many generous gifts & really enjoyed the tissue paper. As with everything else, it finds its way to his mouth. On Christams day, Noah learned that the colored tissue paper will indeed turn your lips a different color. Sometimes we have a tough time keeping up with him already, and he is only getting faster and more curious.

Late on Christmas day - at Steve and Marla's - Noah took his first steps! He took four, then three steps between mommy & daddy. While he is not yet running around the house, he has certainly gained confidence in his balance and is proving more daring all the time.

Laundry has never been so fun...

Mommy has recently found a little helper when it comes to laundry. The washer and dryer are at just the right height for little children like Noah to reach in and help move wet clothes to the dryer, dry clothes to the washer;) and any clothes out from either onto the floor after waving them around!

In addition to removing clothes from the dryer, Noah has found great joy in pulling anything he can get out of any drawer / cabinet drawer he can get into. Twice just tonight, he pulled every book out of his drawer & all his personal care items out of the basket in his changing table. While he has a great time, mommy & daddy then need to come back to pick everything up. We're working to ensure this isn't a long term habit - although it probably is pretty normal, as I've heard that 85% of people will peek in the bathroom vanities of homes in which they are guests. There are a few tricks that can be played to foil these would-be snoops, but that probably doesn't belong here...

Clapping!

Noah recently learned to clap! Actually, daddy's been a little lax in keeping everyon updated & its been almost a month and a half ago. Oh well - I'll try to get you up to speed. One November day, while daddy was at work, I get an email out of the blue from mommy & Noah. You can imaging my delight when I open it up & find that Noah is having a great day home with mommy. Daddy really likes to see photos of the at-home fun!

You can see he is really getting into it!

He is also waving well, playing the "how big is Noah" game, and also enjoys petting the dogs. Choco & Gemma enjoy the extra attention as well.

A concrete adventure...

On Friday, the 6th, we had an adventure with concrete. Grandpa, Uncle Flotty, Aunt Jess, Daddy's friend Chris, Mommy, and Daddy worked to build a new patio out back under the sunroom. Daddy has been doing a lot of research on colored and textured concrete. As a result, he and mommy decided they would prefer to do a stamped stone pattern concrete instead of the pavers that had been planned. We've had a few inquiries & thought we would share a few of the in progress photos.

Before the big day, we spent a fair bit of time digging in some drain tile, removing some clay, and repositioning the base to a consistent thickness. Daddy put up forms as usual & set up stakes for a pipe down the middle of the patio with overall dimensions of 20 x 21.

After pouring plain 'ol grey concrete (it was a slightly special mix for texturing with lots of portland and 1/2" aggregate), we threw the color down onto the concrete surface. We had a few issues that day because of the wind & the leaves that were blowing in it. You'll see later how much of a mess that very fine powder can make as it gets blown around in your face. We put approximately 2/3 of it down the first pass & floated it in to the concrete after about 5 minutes where it absorbed moisture from the concrete itself. Once floated in, we sprinkled the remaining color down & floated once again.

I mentioned the leaves...we had some problems where we just couldn't reach all the leaves to get them back out. I found out later that we had floated & stamped quite a few more leaves into the concrete than I had thought.

Once we had the color all worked into the concrete & the top 1/2" or so of concrete is now colored, grandpa Mike used a texture skin to go around the outside edges near the forms to get some stone texture into the concrete. This was done because the rigid mats are likely to rest on the form & "bridge" over some of the concrete near the edges.

The stamps themselves were "L" shaped & fit together very nicely. Here Chris is setting the next stamp in place. We had 9 rigid mats total - 3 each of 3 different patterns to create the random look. We also had one "floppy" mat that we used around the 4-season footings and along the house where the rigid mats could not get to because we could not bend them.

Next, Flotty would tamp the mat into the concrete to transfer the grout line & stone detail into the concrete. It was very important to use the very fine release agent to help prevent the concrete from sticking to the mat. We thought the color was fine, but the release agent was like throwing baby powder into the wind. The release agent itself does not absorb water, and thereby provides a barrier between the wet concrete & the concrete stamps.

Finally, daddy would follow up with a small roller to touch up the grout lines where needed. This helps to ensure a more realistic pattern. Here you can see the progress we've made half-way across the patio. We tried to work over row by row, leaving one row in place while we leap-frogged the mats to the next row to keep everything aligned and square.

Not only was the wind challenging because it caused the concrete to cure unevenly. As you may be able to tell, the patio closest to the house is much more sheltered from the wind. Flotty had to stamp pretty hard in some spots to get the texture to transfer to the concrete. There are a few spots we could have gone even harder, but the surface was starting to dry out and crack with the significant deformation.

You can see here that Chris & I received the bulk of the color & release powder that was blowing around. We all seem to have pretty white teeth when the rest of us is so brown. Also notice the retaining wall boulders in the photo above & how brown they are! That's not the camera playing tricks - we had that darn powder everywhere & it proved time consuming to clean up!

After finishing up all the texture, we called it a day on the patio. We had to clean up the mats quickly so we could return them to Cemstone that afternoon. Remember how I said that the release agent did not absorb water? It proved to be very time consuming to get the mats clean & all that release off them so the next users would start with a clean set.

The next day, Alice & I vacuumed as much release powder off the patio as we could. We followed up with a broom & finally scrubbed with soap and water to remove the release agent from the surface of the stones. After blowing it off with the air hose to remove the moisture & dry it off, we used a cure and seal to help reduce moisture loss and bring out the color of the concrete. We let that dry out overnight & then covered with silo bag (extremely useful product right behind duct tape;) to help prevent any freezing with the cooler than average temperatures we've been having.

The main color we used for the patio was a "terra cotta" color with a slightly lighter color sprinkled in for some variation. We also used a darker brown release agent, which was embedded primarily in the grout lines for some additional contrast. This is a small sample of the larger patio, but was taken at approximately 8:30 Saturday night as we were trying to finish up the cure and seal application. You can sure see the color come alive with the sealer & even a little of the color variation as well.

As much as I'd like to post photos of the finished product, we've had it covered now for the past week and a half for curing & freeze prevention. Alice & I planted a half-dozen rose shrubs at the end & a number of hostas along each side between the patio and the boulder walls. The plan is to uncover it on Saturday and put down some pine bark mulch on all sides this Saturday to finish it up. Oh yeah, we still need to get the steps back up the deck. Not sure how that's going to work yet, but we'll work that out later...

Apple Orchard

On September 30th, we went to Deer Lake apple orchard. Mommy has made it a tradition to head out to an apple orchard in the fall to take in the sights & smells of fall. We also learned of a new (to us) apple developed at the University of Minnesota - the Zestar. We already have one Honeycrisp apple tree that was developed at the U. That tree barely survived the deer last fall as they nibbled every new shoot & young twig down to the trunk. We still need another tree for pollination & wanted to try out the Zestar apples, but they were all done for the season. If anyone has had any of the Zestar apples, let us know what you think.

We met our friend Sandy & her daughter Jennifer at Deer Lake. Mommy & Sandy have meet now for a couple of years for a day out in the fall sun enjoying the turning leaves. Nobody told daddy that it was yellow shirt day...

Here's Noah in the pumpkin patch again. This is mommy's favorite photo of the day.

Here's Jennifer & Noah sitting among the pumpkins. You can see the beginning of it here, but Jennifer wasn't quite having as much fun as Noah was. It didn't take too long before she had had enough & wanted to get up and run.

Here's one more family photo with Noah on the tricycle. We're thankful that Sandy was willing to snap the pic as we do not get too many family photos when we run the camera.

Mommy & Daddy went to Orlando!

There sure has been a lot going on in our lives recently. Mommy & Daddy went to Orlando, while Noah got to stay at Grandma & Grandpa's house. All the aunts, uncles, & cousins were around to play with as well.

Even though daddy had to work in Florida, he & mommy did find some time to have some fun!

Mommy & Daddy's friends Chris, Carrye, Joe, & Ashley went to Orlando as well. The whole crew spent most of Saturday at Disney-MGM Studios & had a great time. This was the first trip to Disney anywhere for both mommy & daddy.

It was very tough for us to leave Noah for an extended period. Daddy has had to travel for work once or twice, but mommy and Noah have hardley been separated for the past 8 months. There were a number of little kids at Disney, even though they wouldn't ever remember the trip. Every time we saw another little tyke, it reminded us of our Noah at home. Even though leaving Noah was especially emotional for mommy, she did manage to have a great time;)

Here's mommy & daddy sitting in front of the giant guitar at the Aerosmith rock & rollercoaster.

Here's the gang again ready for the muppets 3D. Looks like everyone is having a good time!

Visiting New Babies

We've been busy in recent weeks visiting a few new babies! Ross & Kelly Lexvold had a baby boy, David Ross. Here are a couple of photos from our first meeting.

Here's the whole Lexvold family - Ross, Kelly, & David.

Flotty & Jess had their baby girl on September 11- Lydia Marie. We won't write too much here as you can find more info at their blog http://www.flotterud.blogspot.com/

Here's Aron, Melanie, Noah, and Lydia. Lydia is one day old here when we all crowded into the hospital room to visit & celebrate.

We forget how small new babies are!

Noah was sure interested in his new little cousin. He was very gentle & was holding Lydia's hand here.

Wile E Coyote

Last weekend daddy shot a coyote out on the driveway. There are many around & they are quite a nuisance. We saw one the week before, but by the time daddy went to the bedroom, unlocked & got the rifle, ran to the garage for ammunition, only to remember it was downstairs, the coyote was nowhere to be seen. The dogs were out back, so Alice went out the back door & was very excited to get their attention. Once I took the shot, they couldn't contain their excitement & Alice was no longer as interesting as the prospect of fresh game. They coyote was far enough away that they didn't even know what I was shooting at. Unfortunately for them, they got locked up before daddy & mommy took care of business. I'm sure our garbage service enjoys the stop at our house. Usually a skunk or rabbit, now a 40 lb coyote. What next!

Now - to the fun stuff! Here's Noah enjoying a teething biscuit (which doesn't seem to be much more than a grahm cracker). Just like a little guy should, he's got it all over his face. He is eating three meals a day with the spoon - cereal, fruits, and vegetables. He is a fantastic eater & stays much cleaner when Mommy or Daddy run the spoon.

Noah & his cousin Luke sure enjoyed seeing each other. I think they may have had more fun watching their wild mothers and crazy grandmother as they tried to get them both to smile at the same time.

Noah has been sitting up on his own for quite a while now. He sure enjoys the fact that he can see greater distances, reach for things that grab his attention & roll / scoot to get where he wants to go.

He isn't quite crawling completely, as he doesn't always coordinate the arm movements when his legs say "go". He ends up pushing his face around on the floor more than anything, although just tonight he pushed Pooh's wagon from the carpet over to the tile, but we weren't watching closely enough to see how he made it there.

Daddy has to make the blog now & then. Daddy & the group at work did the afternoon at the lake. Famous Dave's catered barbeque and they spent all afternoon & evening on the water. Here's Daddy showing off. He sure payed for it shortly during his wipeout at 40 mph across the lake. His arm ached for days.

Mommy & Daddy both have blue eyes, but neither of them are quite as blue as Noah's. He sure grabs the ladies attention anywhere he goes, especially at church. He is quite liberal with the smiles & he will make eyes at anyone who is looking in the pews behind.

Grandma & Grandpa came for a visit yesterday on the motorcycle. It was a beautiful day to be out and enjoy the weather. It is always great to see them!

Mommy & Grandma wouldn't miss the opportunity for a little photo shoot. Mommy threw his boots on & Grandma gave Noah her new glasses. I'm sure the look will bring the ladies swooning.

Noah just turned 7 months and already he is asking for a dirt bike. Daddy can't agree more ;)

July gone by...

Boy, has the month flew by. I don't have much time to write stories of grand adventures, but I did want to get a few fun photos out for those of you (if anybody does actually read this) to enjoy. We started off the month with a trip to North Dakota. Mommy & Noah had a good time while daddy helped with the roof at the new house. We also took time as a family to get out on the golf course.

Of course Noah couldn't resist the call of the rocking horse. He hasn't seen a horse before and thought it looked kind of funny. He was used to seeing his "rocking dog", a treasure that grandma had found for him.

Although he is enjoying himself here, he has gotten less excited about the exersaucer in the last couple of weeks. His attention span is decreasing quite a bit & gets bored with things rather quickly - especially those things that he has seen over & over the past few months.

We have gotten many questions regarding the color of our eyes, as Noah's sure are blue. Alice says she likes to dress him in blue shirts because it makes his eyes look even bluer - is that even a word? Daddy just likes to find something that's clean & has something fun like animals or baseball on the front.

Lastly, the reliable bathtub has gotten too small for this big boy. We tried one bath in the big tub, but it just seemed like overkill. Mommy found this fantastic ducky at target & is perfect for Noah sized guys. We couldn't decide which photo to share, so we limited it to 3. Noah likes the new tub as well, because he can sit up by himself and use the inflated sides to balance if necessary.

Finally, there are no photos to prove it (not that anyone really wants to see), but Gemma got her 4th skunk of the summer. You think she'd learn one of these times that they don't like her & really stink up the place. The hunter that she is, she brought it back so proudly & dropped it at my feet. Mommy was thankful for a sinus infection that left her without a sense of smell;) There was also one more rabbit, but we've lost count on those. She has been doing pretty good on birds, but I guess I haven't given her enough to keep her busy during the summer so she has to make her own adventures.

Day at the lake

Today was Noah's first day at the lake. We went up to Big Swan Lake with Chris & Carrey and had a great time! Noah watched daddy's poor attempt at wakeboarding. While daddy didn't have any trouble starting off or jumping the wake, his landings sure could use some work;)

Noah and mommy spent the afternoon on the beach visiting with the crew. Even though Noah was wearing some pretty potent sunscreen, he still stayed out of the sun as much as possible. Mommy was wearing sunscreen (& you can tell where she wasn't ;) and spent more time in the sun

We were excited to get Noah into his little swimmers so he could splash in the water himself. Even though the sun was out & warming things up, Daddy & Noah didn't spend too much time in the relatively cool (when compared to the bathtub) water. It was sure fun to get out to enjoy the sun at the lake!

Here are a couple of fun new photos...

I don't know why, but mommy has had it in her head that we need a couple of photos of Noah a la natual. Daddy's no photographer yet, but he is trying. I'm sure Noah will appreciate this one at graduation time ;)

Oh yeah, we still have a couple of dogs as well (you wouldn't know it if you were just reading the blog as of late). Here, Choco and Gemma are tracking down the elusive chipmunk. While this chipmunk is still bringing his A-game, the chipmunk that lived in the west boulder wall wasn't as skillful.

In addition to the chipmunk, Gemma has brought back a few other trophies. She must have found a nest of rabbits, as there was a week where she came back to the house with a bunny each night.
